The Peace 101 Program at the International Peace Museum offers a unique educational experience designed to engage students of all ages in the principles of peace, kindness, and social justice. With a variety of courses tailored to primary, middle, and high school students, each session incorporates interactive discussions, creative activities, and thought-provoking topics. From exploring the meaning of peace and the impact of social media to examining identity and representation, these courses aim to foster critical thinking and encourage positive action within communities, empowering the next generation of peacemakers
Peace 101 courses:
What Is Peace? An introduction
Grades 3+
1.5 - 2 hours
Though a commonly used word, peace is not easy to define. What does it mean to have peace or to promote it? This introductory course will encourage you to consider what peace means to you and the implications it has on yourself, your family, your community, and the world. The course will consist of a tour of the museum, a discussion, and an activity centered on our mosaic exhibit.
The Kindness of Strangers
Grades 3+
1.5 - 2 hours
What does it mean to be kind? How do small acts of kindness impact others? These are some of the questions this course will tackle throughout a group discussion and performance activity.
Coming of Age
Grades 5+
1.5 - 2 hours
What does it mean to “Come of Age”? What do you think it will mean in the future? The course will consist of a discussion and an art activity.
The Masks We Live In
Grades 5+
1.5 - 2 hours
How do you identify yourself? What are the things about us that we want others to see? What are society’s influences on our identity? These are some of the questions this course will tackle throughout a group discussion (including LGBTQ+ topics) and performance activity.
Navigating Friendships:
The Good and the Bad
Grades 3+
1.5 - 2 hours
What qualities make a good friend? How do our friendly actions ripple throughout the community? The course will consist of a discussion.
FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)
Grades 5+
1.5 - 2 hours
What is FOMO? How do you handle it? How does social media impact our relationships? This course explores the human impact of social networking. It is for anyone wishing to recognize and think critically about social media interaction. This course consists of a lecture followed by a tour of the Dis-information museum exhibit and group discussion.
Miss Representation
Grades 9+
2 hours
Miss Representation is a course centered on the impact of social media on the female experience, and the under-representation of women in positions of power. It is for anyone wishing to recognize and think beyond the role the media plays in sexism. This course consists of a lecture followed by a group discussion.
